Description
This photo is of the wooden eagle that was formerly on top of the last U.S. Customs House at 160 Derby Street in Salem, Massachusetts. Due to rotting and deterioration, it was taken down, restored, and an identical polymer one was created and placed on the roof. This one is the restored one, which is housed on display inside the Custom House. It is made of several pieces of oak, held together with metal, and is painted with real gold gilding. The eagle clutches an olive branch in one talon, arrows in the other talon, and a shield with the U.S. flag symbols is placed in front of it. It was carved by Joseph True, a renowned Salem carver.
