Union Occupation of Vicksburg
Description
The mighty Mississippi River as viewed west from Vicksburg, Mississippi. This location was among the most highly contested locations during the Civil War. The Union army and navy, under General U.S. Grant's direction, attempted to capture Vicksburg for a year and half before it finally fell. Its capture soon gave the Union full control of the Mississippi River, and Vicksburg was used as a base of military operations for the remainder of the war.
