A recent photograph of the Shirley family house, along Jackson Road, in Vicksburg National Military Park. The Shirley's were Unionists who maintained their loyalty despite overwhelming support for the Confederacy in Vicksburg. Thier house would end up being in the middle of the battlefield. It would be the only house that would survive on the battlefield, through a combination of fortuitous luck and the family's Unionist inclinations.
